Growing up, I always thought I would end up working in New York City. I dreamt of the day where I would see my name in flashing lights on a marquee in the Theatre District. Like almost every little girl who grew up in the ballet studio, I wanted to be on Broadway. I have since reevaluated my dream career and tailored it towards my current interests. The dream of living and working in New York City, however, has never changed.
On Sunday morning, I will be arriving in New York City, again. Like every trip to the Big Apple, I will have my favorite suitcase stuffed full with way too many outfit opinions and my go-to tote bag packed up with food and electronics. I will still be arriving to the city with a dream. Though Fashion Week and visiting my bosses at MTV have provided me a tiny taste of what my future will be, this trip to NYC will really be giving me a sneak peak into my future.
Starting Monday morning I will be trading in my jumpsuit for my business suit and my camera for my resume!
High Point University selected ten students for their inaugural HPU in the City: New York. I will be spending two extremely busy, extremely educational days in NYC. I will visiting five top companies such as Goldman Sachs, Ralph Lauren and Fox News. I am blow away by the opportunities High Point provides, but I am even more excited for the professional development skills that I will learn and the connections I will make while visiting these companies.
Seven Seniors, one Junior, one Sophomore, and me, the lone, and slightly terrified Freshman. I have been trying not to talk about my upcoming trip because I do not know what to say. I am speechless that I was selected, terrified to be the only Freshman going, and amazed at the opportunities hard work brings your way. Honestly, I am not exactly sure what to expect. I have never been to NYC for anything but work so this trip should not be freaking me out as much as I am allowing it to. For every negative, scared thought I have, I can think of two positive outcomes to the same situation.
The future is scary. It is what you make it.
Hard work, a little fun, and a lot of positive thinking are necessary to turn your dreams into reality. What ever it is that you think you want to do, dream bigger. There is a whole other world, or city, waiting to be explored. Envision the craziest future for yourself- a future where you are doing something you never thought possible, and chase after that dream.
Inhale confidence, exhale fear.
Always believe in yourself. You are the one that gets to determine your future.
Be sassy, optimistic, and a little bit darling.
Oh, and stay quirky!
