Sophomore year has come to an end and I am experiencing a roller coaster of emotions. For once I am really sad to leave my friends, really freaked out that I am a JUNIOR in college and really nervous for what I am about to announce… this summer I will be moving to TAMPA!!! Yep, that’s right. Tampa. I have hinted at it on Facebook and Instagram but I have not officially announced my summer plans.
I spent last summer bopping around the country in search of the perfect city to intern in this summer. Though I loved D.C., I couldn’t find an internship that paid enough to live comfortably without going in-debt. New York City was a fun time, but it was too hot and over-crowded for my liking. I had my sites set on a summer in Charleston but unfortunately the city lacks internship opportunities. I think I’ve spent too much time in the South to want to live anywhere with a huge hustle and bustle attitude, at least this summer.
Last September, Ashley Furniture made a recruiting visit to my university. The company sent two young women who had very, very important roles in the company. They are total girl-bosses and I wanted to learn from them. Ashley Furniture promotes and encourages its employees to chase their dreams. There is room for growth and leadership within the company- something very rare for a company its size and for corporate culture. Though I never had this burning desire to work in the furniture industry, I fell in love with the representatives from the company. I knew I needed to work for Ashley and was determined to land this internship.
In February, the team came back to campus. Not even five minutes into my second interview, they extended an offer for me to join their team. It was really a dream come true.
Though furniture still is not my dream industry, I love everything about it. Furniture is fashion, it is structured, it is stable. I worked the High Point Furniture Market (basically the Fashion Week of furniture) in mid-April. This allowed me to become immersed in the industry.
I truly believe an internship at Ashley Furniture will take my career to the next level. I am ecstatic to learn and work in beautiful Tampa Bay this summer! I will be documenting it all though a new mini-series titled #10WeeksInTampa!!
May 15 begins my long awaited journey into the corporate world. I will be spending 10 weeks navigating this scary thing we call life all alone. I will be 2,000 miles from home (the furthest I have ever been!!), in a city I have never been to, working in eCommerce (lol what even is eCommerce?!).
I am scared, but that is to be expected. I am excited, but who wouldn’t be?! Life is about taking risks, exploring on your own and learning to navigate your life tailored to your needs. You only get 10 years to enjoy your 20’s, might as well live them up!
If you have any food recommendations, places to shop and visit please leave it in the comments below!
Here’s to taking risks, moving on and enjoying every unplanned step of life.
